Grossular garnet

Specimen ID: WNM-JMC

Title
Grossular garnet
Locality
As recorded:
Cerro de Moka, Sierra de Cruces, Municipio de Sierra Mojada, Coahuila, Mexico
Dimensions
100mm x 70mm x 52mm
Description
Several sharp, dramatic, intergrown, well-formed, lustrous, gemmy crystals of ruby-red Grossular garnets to 17 x 13 mm are perched on a strikingly contrasting white matrix. The matrix is a mixture of fine grained clear to whitish garnets and what is likely Wollastonite. Like all these specimens, the garnets were mechanically excavated without any repairs, and it is in very good condition, with just little dings present, as is normal with these specimens. One side of the main garnet was incompletely formed showing the greenish core, and the garnets are partly matrix included. It could be improved by air-abraision. The piece is quite good for this locality, and has nice aesthetics. Collected December of 1992 by Graham Sutton and Bob Griffis.
