A tribute to Gunnar Raade on his 70th birthday

Gunnar Raade (b.1944), Associate Professor Emeritus and former Head Curator of Minerals at the Mineralogical- Geological Museum, National History Museum, University of Oslo is 70 years old on May 6th 2014. This article is a small tribute to his significant contributions to the science of mineralogy.

He is a well known mineralogist in Norway as well as international for his many contributions to the science of mineralogy, his museological work, and as the Norwegian representative of the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA), as author of 19 new minerals, as guest-speaker, lecturer, founder of the Friends of the Geological Museum in Oslo (GMV) and so on.

There is no doubt that Gunnar Raade is the most outstanding mineralogist in Norway since World War II, and he have described more new species to science than any other Norwegian mineralogist in modern time. His skill, precision and systematic work throughout the years has resulted in:

• a great improvement of the exhibitions of the mineral collections of the museum.
• an extensive addition of scientific, valuable, aesthetical and rare minerals to the collections, mostly through financial support by the GMV.
• a large number of publications on new mineral findings in Norway, and description of new species.
• as commission member of CNMNC since 1982 to 2013, and voted on more than 2000 new species !
• close relation to amateur mineralogists in the Norwegian community.


The mineral Raadeite is named to honor him, "for his contribution to the mineralogy of Mg-phosphates" (Chopin et al. 2001).
He was the Head Curator of Minerals in 1981-2006 at the Mineralogical- Geological Museum, University of Oslo. He was retired a few years ago, but is still working on new and interesting species, and he will probably continue to do that in the years to come.
