What's new on our 21st anniversary?

Last Updated: 25th Dec 2014

By Jolyon & Katya Ralph

On Christmas Day 1993, I went up to my room bored with what was on TV and decided to start writing a mineral database.

Now, 21 years later we have come quite some way...

As you know, for the last year I've been working full-time on mindat.org (with a little time off for the birth of my son!), and it's very nearly time for you to see the results of this work.

One of the many new features is a vastly improved image viewer. Here's a little video to show you what is coming soon...

or view on YouTube in full resolution

Just like the Queen of England, mindat has 2 birthdays.

December 25th 1993 - Date I started writing mindat (as a stand-alone DOS application)

October 10th 2000 - Date I launched the mindat.org website

So while mindat is 21 years old and can now buy me a drink in the US, the mindat.org website is still a difficult teenager.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Hi Jolyon

New viewer looks great. Hope it doesn't eat up too much memory.
Looking forward to the changes.

Thanks for all your efforts Jolyon, and those of the Management Team and other "helpers" too - look forward to seeing the upgraded version.

I forgot to add that if you have a Retina screen (eg a new iMac or MacBook Pro then it will use the full resolution of your display hardware :)

Nice, Joylon! Really appreciate all the work you and others have done to create and maintain this site. I've personally been trying to promote Mindat to rock hounds here in Finland in my recent printed modest articles. I think more people could benefit from the database - and the invaluable message boards - not just the seasoned, serious amateur mineralogists.

Nice, Jolyon!
I like that the copyright information floats on the image no matter how far in one zooms.
See you in Tucson.
