Old Wada Mineral Locality Conversions

Last Updated: 3rd Feb 2020

By Peter Andersen

THE OLD WADA MINERAL LOCALITY CONVERSIONS

The English version of Tsunashiro Wada’s book “Minerals of Japan” was first published in 1904. This book was the first comprehensive document in English that listed the minerals and their occurrence in Japanese localities. A problem that now exists with this book is that there was a political boundary reorganisation of the provinces into the current prefectures and this occurred in the 1930’s. The reorganisation of the old provinces resulted in many of the localities mentioned in Tsunashiro Wada’s book “Minerals of Japan” not making any sense anymore. This section now aligns the old locality descriptions with what they now should be. It has been done by species in the alphabetical order with the page numbers shown where they can be found in Wada’s book. Please note that there have also been some spelling changes in the way some localities are now currently spelt. I have based the newer spellings on what has been written under the main section that lists the particular species by Prefecture locality in the book “Introduction To Japanese Minerals” (edited by M. Nambu- 1970). Also the localities with a double Prefecture are those that I cannot truthfully recognize which of the two Prefectures the locality is actually in. This is a problem when the old provincial boundary cuts through two of the modern prefectures. Anything in brackets is an addition that I have added to the locality so that it makes sense with current names, especially those localities that are mentioned in the book “Introduction To Japanese Minerals” edited by M. Nambu (1970).
In his book Wada noted that the principal mines recognized as being good localities for minerals are the following:
Kosaka, Kamaishi, Furokura and Osaruzawa in Rikuchu Province;
Ani, Daira, Arakawa, Tsubaki and Innai in Ugo Province;
Aikawa in Sado Province;
Ashio in Shimotsuke Province;
Kamioka in Hida Province;
Kuratani in Kaga Province;
Ikuno in Tajima Province;
Besshi and Ichinokawa in Iyo Province.
The chief mineral localities, other than mines, noted for minerals in Wada’s book are the following:
Ishikawa in Iwaki Province;
Yamano in Hitachi Province;
Kimpu-zan and its environs in Kai Province;
Takayama (Region) and its environs in Mino Province;
Tanokami-yama in Omi Province;
Kiura and Obira in Bungo Province;
Yamaura in Hyuga Province;
Obara in Rikuzen Province;
Maze in Echigo Province;
Amagi-san in Izu Province.
Most of these mines and mineral localities listed by Wada are now regarded as being true classic localities for the minerals that are found there. Localities marked with an * are localities that are mentioned in other parts of the book besides the main localities listed under the relevant mineral species section.
