Please can I have two minutes of your time?

Jolyon RalphA new personal request from Jolyon Ralph,
the founder of mindat.org

Mindat.org needs your help RIGHT NOW.

I apologise for interrupting your use of mindat.org with our plea, but as a regular user of mindat.org your help is needed RIGHT NOW to keep our site alive.

Rock was always trying to raise money for mindatSome of you may have heard that the late Rock Currier, a long-term supporter of mindat.org, left us a significant part of his estate to the Hudson Institute of Mineralogy in order to ensure mindat.org continues its mission to provide free mineral information to all. This is an amazing gift and can help us build a lasting legacy - but as with many such estates there are catches:

Firstly, the estate may take years to settle - and in the meantime we still have bills to pay - now far more than before with legal costs and other significant expenses to do with the estate. While the long-term future for mindat.org is good, we survive day-by-day for now on the donations that you provide.

Secondly, with the more difficult market now for mineral dealers our mineral dealer advertising funding is slowing down. The only way to replace this is with personal donations. However, if you're a dealer and wish to advertise (or even if you are a private individual wishing to support us with a paid advertisement for your personal website) then click here for advertising information and rates.

Thirdy, and most importantly, our gift from Rock Currier will be used to build an endowment fund. In order to ensure the fund does not dry up we must never give up on our fundraising activities in order to not just protect mindat.org for the next few years, but to protect it forever.

I want to thank you all for helping to build this incredible resource. Now I need your continued help, year after year, to ensure that we are able to protect this for generations to come.

Jolyon

What is the Hudson Institute of Mineralogy?

The Hudson Institute of Mineralogy was formed in 2003 to offer expanded public outreach and dissemination of mineral specimens and mineralogical information at no charge to earth science teachers, students and the general public. In the ensuing dozen years since its inception, thousands of mineral specimens and significant amounts of laboratory equipment have been obtained and subsequently donated by the Institute to advance mineralogical education and awareness. The designation of Mindat.org activities as the major outreach effort of the Hudson Institute is a logical step in the development of both organizations, and it also provides Mindat.org with additional, tax exempt funding opportunities to ensure its long-term viability. The operations management of Mindat.org remains unchanged, and several Mindat managers have joined the Board of Directors of the Hudson Institute of Mineralogy.

The board members of the Hudson Institute of Mineralogy are Jolyon Ralph (Mindat founder), Ida Chau (co-founder) as well as Mindat managers Tony Nikischer, David Von Bargen, Vandall King, Chet Lemanski, Alfredo Petrov, Gail and Jim Spann, Robert Downs and Robert Woodside
