Korshunikha, as indicated on the label, was the name of the village founded in 1948 near the iron deposit. Its name is due to its location on the River Korshunikha (a right-bank tributary of River Ilim), whose name was given in honour of Shestachko Korshunov, who discovered the iron deposit in the 17th century. In the 1950s the village was renamed Zheleznogorsk and in 1965 gained the status of town.
