Identity HelpUnknown Guatemalan Mineral Found

I am currently living in Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

These are photos of a mineral I found.

At first I thought it may be junk or garbage, etc. But I've been finding these all over. Including inside cliff formations.

It is very light and somewhat brittle. With enough effort I can break a piece in piece with my hands.

It's weight feels even lighter than Pumice. That I know of, there are no volcanoes in the area, so probably not Pumice or any type of volcanic rock (it could be, but I'm leaning towards it not being that.)

The Huehuetenango area use to be at the bottom of the ocean around 300 million years ago, so one of my guesses was fossilized plants or coral.

My second guess was Laumontite Quartz Cast, as it feels similar to Laumontite I've found in New Jersey.

There also appears to be small crystal-type formations in the matrix, perhaps silica or mica?

Any ideas?

I think this is typical pumice - full of air holes, and strands of volcanic glass. Here is a link to the list/location of volcanoes in Guatemala:

perhaps. I'm about 2 hours from the nearest volcanos, Santa Maria and its neighboring volcanos... I'm sure they could have shot ash and material that far.

Before I arrived in Guatemala i was digging in Puebla, Mexico, for volcanic material, near the Popo volcano. I had thought it was Pumice i was finding, but it seems much heavier than this material.

Any ideas what this would be? Could it just be a different type of pumice?

Looks like tuff.

Hi Robert,

The image is not very clear on my monitor, but it does look like pyroclastic material (ignimbrite or tuff), which can contain bits of pumice along with other materials that come exploding out of a volcano. Pumice per se is a solidified, glassy froth, but the chemistry can vary, although it is usually so porous and light that it temporarily "floats".

What a great place to collect!

Agree.

First one looks like a typical pumice, especially with the weight you describe.

Second one looks like a pyroclastic, probably a tuff.
