Hi all, I posted this bowl of rocks in beach river finds last week because I was doing something fun with vinegar. I left for a week ( big sur camping) and when I returned the vinegar had dissipated and this was left.

What is it?

Should I toss in a secure trash binit quickly or add more vinegar or.....thank you in advance.

i dont think this is that uncommon. some limestone i find here in guatemala (and some other minerals) will do this. Basically the vinegar is crystallizing (i think). I've had quite large 3/4" crystals growing from dissipating vinegar if left long enough.

I'll add some more and let the process continue. What would their composition be? How would time affect its growth or detereation.

Hi

I think it is calcium acetate monohydrate Ca(CH3COO)2•H2O. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium_acetate

Ilkka

I agree with Ilkka. The calcium acetate should dissolve in water.

It dissolved in vinegar once added more. thx

I once used vinegar to (slowly) dissolve away calcite from some grossular garnet crystals. Then I later rinsed them in water, then soaked them in some baking soda solution (to undo any acid traces). I left the baking soda solution and forgot and it dried up. Nice little fern-like 'crystals' Funny things can result by drying up.
