Identity HelpBuergerite tourmaline?

Hello

I manage public information for a nonprofit gem and mineral club. I received a request to identify this mineral. If it cannot be identified from the photo, then I have recommended to the owner to create a profile here, perform the necessary mineral identification tests, and post his picture with more detail.

But in case the mineral is obvious to the experts on this website, I am asking you as well.

The only information I have, beside the photo, is the owner of the mineral believes it is Buergerite tourmaline. I have no experience with this stone to offer an ID.

My sincere thank you for your input.

It's definitely not buergerite, those crystals are typically bronzish-brown. These crystal look more like either epidote or maybe one of the green tourmaline species.

The crystal in the lower right end seems to show a hexagonal outline, so not likely a green tourmaline. Does he have a locality for the specimen? That is always a big help to us in "eyeballing" an ID.

It makes me think of actinolite (or an other green amphibole): cross-section can greatly help to identify.

Looks like tremolite to me.

Thank you so much. I will forward your comments (or send this link) to the person who inquired. I greatly appreciate your expert assistance!

Looks very similar to the Selleck Road Tremolite

Just an FYI, here is a link to Mindat's buergerite page. This type of tourmaline are quite rare and usually are expensive. Also, and I didn't know this until I looked closer, it appears the real name is fluor-buergerite. The second link is just for buergerite which isn't a valid species apparently!!

"Buergerite" is a valid species, in the sense that it was properly described and never discredited, but the name was "adjusted" to Fluor-buergerite to fit the new tourmaline nomenclature scheme.

Ah, thanks Alfredo for the clarffication! I was going off of what the Mindat link said about the mineral as a "not recognized as a species."
