Identity HelpQuestion about plaster from Igea - Spain
10th Jan 2019 07:41 UTCWilfred Hemme
Recently I bought a specimen via Catawiki labelled as plaster from Igea in the La Rioja Region of Spain. According to Mindat plaster (of Paris) is a synonym for bassanite. Further investigation at the internet learned me that the formula of plaster is not corresponding with bassanite. The formula of plaster is similar to gypsum. Is this specimen bassanite indeed or is it a variety of gypsum or something totally different ? My investigation/thoughts might be wrong and I hope somebody is willing to explain me this casus. Many thanks in advance. Cheerse Wilfred

Plaster is made by roasting gypsum to drive out some of the water in its composition, Therefore, fresh, raw plaster after the cooking is Bassanite.
Plaster after it is used, once it has been rehydrated, is Gypsum because the water is restored to its composition.
