UV MineralsWelcome!

30th Jan 2016 17:51 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

Here is a new message board area to discuss fluorescence in minerals and other related properties.

We are going to be adding a significant amount of information to mindat regarding fluorescent properties this year!

It's great we can discuss here about fluorescents.

I suppose is understood that under the term Fluorescent Minerals this section involves also other types of luminescence (phosphorescence, triboluminescence, tenebrescence, thermoluminescence, etc.) which sometimes are associated to fluorescent properties.

In case anyone does not know, here there is a link to a very useful database: Luminescent Minerals

Great topic.I just started specializing in fluorescents last year. The funny thing is that I can afford the rocks, but not the lights. I guess I'll specialize in LW UV for awhile.

Awesome Jolyon. Thank you for adding this important forum to Mindat!

I hope to be able to contribute and add many photos of "glow rocks"..... :-D

Hurray! Thanks for adding this forum. To celebrate, here's an image of my favorite fluorescent stuff, Terlingua type calcite.

Ranger Dave:

There are plenty of good LW fluorescent minerals and lotsa material available. Here's a pic of a casual LW collection I dedicated one corner of my display area to. All sortsa stuff there, even some willemite is strongly fluorescent in LW. Goes to show you never know until you lamp it!

You just made a lot of collectors very happy, Jolyon.

There will not be a shortage of photos, most likely.

I'll notify my workgroup Fluorescent Minerals of the Mineralogical Soceity of Antwerp. They Love it!

Thanks

Very good Jolyon,

My wife Mary has me check all things we collect in SE Arizona and lots does fluoresce. It will be a good place to post photos and questions.

Thank you J.

I'll look forward to comments on how to photograph them.

Given past discussions and requests here has been a lot of demand for this.

Cheers

Perhaps some links?

Or is it possible to create a data file, where everybody can posts data for locations?

Mineral, color, shape, fluorescence SW MW LW, comments.

Good luck.
