21st Dec 2010 23:05 UTCHarjo Neutkens Manager

This is my list of the most beautiful Mindat micro photos.

Only one photo per photographer (excuse me for including one of my own, it's a bit awkward, I know...).

If you have a suggestion for a photo to be included please reply in this topic.

Have fun!

One picture may be worth a thousand words, but it doesn't describe the equipment used to capture the images. If it were possible, a description of the equipment used would be as important to me as the images themselves.

This is the photo the inspired me to learn about micro-photography - I have miles to go to be able to achieve these results, but this, and the rest of its companions will continue to inspire.

Terrific idea for a "best of" thread!

Yes Bryan, I like that one very much too, but I already included Bob's Slipfontein photo. I only want one photo per photographer. I could however replace Bob's Slipfontein Carminite with his Analcime, difficult choice, both are great....

I second that. I mean, technically I would know how to reproduce all images, except one: the Analcime photo by Volker Betz. This one almost looks like a colored SEM-Image. The depth (I don't mean DOF) and clarity are intriguing.

Harjo,

Thanks for this gallery. It is very enjoyable, and putting it together must have taken some time, since there are so many photographs on Mindat to chose from. It is great to see these selections, based on your excellent knowledge of micro mineral photography, and the consistency of criteria from one knowledgeable person. I was very happy to be included in this group.

For your information, the equipment statement for my photograph would be: Nikon Coolpix 8400; Qioptic/Optem Zoom 125C Optical System consisting of Coupler (25-84-00-02), 1.0X TV Tube (29-90-72), Zoom 125C Zoom Module & Focus (30-61-20 & 30-13-10), and 2.0X Aux Lens (29-20-41); Zerene Stacker.

Volker, I already recognized that and in the same course have browsed your zeolithe images on your website. Very impressive - and it shows once again that one does not need sophisticated equipment to achieve outstanding results. It all boils down to "Know how to use your equipment".

Looking at your set-up, I can see that your lighting is very simple which in the case of the respective analcime image was obviously an advantage. Anyway, very well done.

Fantastic.

I notice all the Euro names, and wonder what it is that most of the best photomicrographers are out of Europe... patience, access to the best lenses, willingness to spend 20k on gear, spare time, or what, puzzling.

Needs mineral name and locality, stat.

This would be the start of a truly fabulous wall poster, say a meter across, each image 15 cm or so... is it feasible!

Just waiting Fred. Some manager has to approve them before they are online. This can last some hours up to some days.

6th Sep 2013 12:14 UTCOlav Revheim Manager

Fred,

As a new member, all of your photos requires approval from one of Mindat's area experts to get a site-wide display status. The approval process may take anything from hours to several days. This has partly to do with expert workload ( it is a system based on volunteers, everyone has a daytime job outside Mindat). Minerals that are rare, from obscure places or has a complex relationship to other species may take longer time to approve than more common minerals. Sometimes there will be a correspondence between an expert an a photo uploader prior to approval of a photo for site-wide display.

If your photos generally are of reasonably decent quality, correctly named and assigned to the correct locality, you will eventually be able to upload photos site-wide without an expert approval.

From what I can see you have uploaded two photos that are in the approval queue, but unfortunately, I do not have sufficient knowledge on these secondary minerals and localities to approve them.

Hope this helps
