In Jolyon's article about the Tuscon show, he mentions a company that is doing 360 degree imaging of minerals, and he says that this is fully supported on mindat now.

Are there any examples on the database now? Does it need a special program or app to view?

I would have left a comment after the article, but it would not allow me to.

I asked several months ago about another 360* view app (Rotaryview.com) but didn't get a response.

I'm inerested in this technique. Is it possible to make 40 or 50 images with my camera (specimen mounted on a rotary table) and with which software can I combine this images and what file format has it (gif)?

Yes. if you create your own images with your own hardware all you need to do is to make sure they are JPEGS in alphabetical order (eg f001.jpg, f002.jpg etc), zip them into a .zip file and upload that as if it was a normal photo. Mindat will create your spin automatically from these. Be careful to check the new options that appear near the top of the page regarding if you want the rotation to loop (usually you do). At the moment selecting the start frame doesn't really work properly so ignore that, and make sure the first frame in your zip is the one that you want to be the starting point.

Jolyon, will a less than 360º sequence work as well, for example, 15 images covering 90 to 120 degree rotation?

This is an exciting development. Wait 'till the micro photographers get a hold of this. I can see stacked images from all sides taking hundreds of images to combine into one 360* presentation.

FYI: These presentations didn't work properly in Safari browser. I had to switch to Internet Explorer. I didn't try any other browsers yet.

I tried Google Chrome, Firefox and Dolphin (on my Kindle Fire). All worked better than Safari for Windows on my computer. I got it to work on Safari, but the image "stuttered" as I turned it, and it took longer to load. Maybe I need to dump this browser and re-install it.

Safari isn't supported anymore on Windows. Better to get rid of it.

It's up to version 8 now on the Mac. Chrome on Windows is closer to modern Mac Safari than the old Windows Safari.

Firefox, Chrome, Safari 8 and IE11 are the best options for using this.

ps. Yes, it will support any type of animation, however many frames. For < 360 degree rotations it's just a matter of NOT selecting the option to loop the animation.

I'll also be using this for rotating images of minerals under a petrological crossed-polarized microscope

Dennis - glad you noticed, my avatar is an animated GIF single image, its been like that for several years. I just happened to have these three images already mostly in overlap synchronization, wanted to load them, as a child image, as a proof of concept. I have a dozen or so sets like this which I may upload, as time permits.

Jolyon - would be nice if the rotation feature could be searchable in the photo search option, and/or an overlay indicator added in the thumbnail views - much like the indicator for child photos (even better, indicate if the image is rotatable, fluorescent sequence, or something else)

Jeff. A known bug on android.

Go to the mindat menu option More -> Device Options

and there is a fix on there.

Jolyon, works, thanks - but now my fluorescent image is all smeared out the opposite way *sigh*, guess you need to change the setting depending on the number of images in a rotation? Or maybe type of rotation - continuous or ending. I set the fluorescent image to "stop at end".

Well.. this is why i really dislike Android.

I have three different android devices here, two of them didn't show the problem, one does, and shows two images, and the fix works perfectly for that.

Did you try the option for two images not four?

I uploaded a quartz crystal photo'd over 360 degrees at Tucson (42 frames). There's a gold-colored rotation icon at lower right, but it won't rotate. I did see a notice in red that one file was larger than what was expected. What do I do now?

Certainly a nice improvement.

Would be still better with a command to activate animation, without need to push with the pointer.

I can't get José’s to turn. When I slide the pointer the photo just flashes back and forth from using white lighting to fluorescent lighting. Mine doesn’t turn, either (below). Is there something wrong with my settings here?

Jose - you can use the [ and ] keys.

Norman - your zip file did not upload properly there was a problem with at least one of the frames - please try again, make sure there is nothing in the zip file except the images, no extra folders etc.

As someone who does a bit of micro work, and likes stereo views, I think I can say that micro shutterbugs won't be making dozens of stacked images at different angles. The stacked images require too much labor, including touchup, and the time needed would be prohibitive. BUT there's no need for extra depth of field if you can move things; a pan and zoom sequence would work very well for many micro specimens. I may have to give it a try!

Norman, Jose's file doesn't turn, it displays the same side under differing light sources. He has both sides available to view, tap the arrow at the left of the photo.

Also, the possibility to upload mp4 videos might be interesting and useful for microminerals, polarised scope stuff etc. Got to give it a go at some point...

Brilliant absolutely brilliant, Id almost go as far as to say the best new feature on Mindat. I struggle with seeing stereo images and 3D movies in the cinema but this 360° rotation gives one such a 3D feel its just amazing. Well done Jolyon.

This is very nice development. It opens up all kinds of possibilities. I made a testfile and tried to upload it as a photo but the upload process keeps on failing.

Here is what I did.

1. Shot a numer of photos and saved these as JPEGs.

2. Put these files in a folder and zipped the whole folder.

3. Opened "My home page/My photos/Add photo".

4. Selected the zipped folder (a file named .zip) and hit the Upload -button.

Mindat runs this upload process for a while and fails.

Maybe my file is too big? Is 40 megabytes the maximum also for these zips?

You might be able to upload a larger than 40MB zip or mp4 file now. I haven't checked what the exact limit is, but in general if you have more than 40MB it's not going to be ideal for playback anyway.

Made a 2.7 megabyte mp4 movie from some jpegs and tried to upload it to Mindat.

Got the following message from Mindat:

"Sorry - Your photo did not load. It may not be a valid JPEG, PNG or MPO file, or the file may be too large to upload"

I uploaded the movie (just a testmovie) to Flickr with no problems. You can see the movie here

This is all fairly new to me, so I might be messing things up.

Now I did handicrafts a simple rotary table. Before I start with the first tests I have some soft ware questions as follows:

How much pictures should be made for a 360 degree turn? Is it important to adjust the same angle from picture to picture?

Video is still an experimental feature and not all video formats will work correctly.

I've created spins with 24, 36 and 40 photos and all look good, but the more photos the better it looks. It's quite important to get the angle the same between each photo.

I was trying to upload an animation of an halyte growth on eucalyptus sequence but did a mistake including in the zip the last two pics of different size. Of course, the animation do not works: http://www.mindat.org/photo-682799.html

The problem is that new upload system does not allow to replace the zip file by another one with all pics of the same size.

Neither allows me to upload a new zip file with all pics with same size as a child photo arguing "Your photo is likely a duplicate of ..."

I'm afraid I need the help of a gentle administrator.

I uploaded a new zip with all images at the same size and in alphabetical order, but not correlative. Maybe this is the reason that makes that the pics to appear disorderly?

Sorry for be mistaken again but the new upload limitation (This photo cannot be replaced as it is in use ...) prevents me to fix it myself. I am afraid that I need your help again.

I just tried to upload my first spin-photo zip file. I'm pretty sure I did everything correctly. Batch processed 36 images, so they should all be the same dimensions, and then created a zip of about 7 MB.

On upload I got the following error:

Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function zip_open() in /home/mindat/www/photoupload.php:577 Stack trace: #0 {main} thrown in /home/mindat/www/photoupload.php on line 577

If it helps, I'm running Firefox Quantum 64.0 64 bit.

Any ideas?
