Field CollectingCalifornian Lawsonite

30th Nov 2015 21:16 UTCJason Ferguson

Anyone with knowledge of the localities listed in Sonoma county, Marin County and Mendocino county? I have always liked this mineral and would love to venture out and see if there are any location I can access and possibly find some.

Thank you,

Try this locality http://www.mindat.org/loc-3502.html (Laytonville quarry), just beside a main road, and with a lot of rare minerals.

Hello,

the only place to find currently Lawsonite are on the farm land area north of Valley Ford. In all the other location I have visit during the last years, I cannot find any (include Laytonville). One big problem is the all ways present Albite - Glacophane barring rocks, close to the Lawsonite-Glaucophane rocks. It is very difficult to distinguish this in the field.

Best wishes

Thasks Erik, I'll have to check out that place. I'll have to see about the farm lands. Iv rode through that area with my motorcycle, love it out there.

I've managed to find two nice specimens of Laswonite and glaucophane at the above-mentioned Laytonville Quarry. Also a good deal of rare minerals (as stated), very small garnets typically on blue-schist (nice display pieces). I've also found numerous pyrite cubes in-situ.
