Field CollectingRockhounding in NJ

23rd Mar 2018 16:19 UTCKyle Kustka

Hello i am relatively new to rockhounding and live in central New Jersey. recently i have been researching areas to rockhound in New jersey and honestly theres not much here. Other than Franklin/sterling hill mine and areas with Herkimer diamonds. Are there any other spots in NJ.

Hello Kyle,

Until 6 years ago, I lived in central NJ (46 yrs). And I understand your frustration. Most localities have been closed. Where in NJ are you located? There are serious collectors, including field collectors, in the Morris Museum Mineralogical Society. The Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society is worth joining, too. Go to the NJ Earth Science Show in Franklin (the last weekend in April, I think). There are some places one can still collect in the state, and contact with other collectors will help. And eastern Pennsylvania is not that far away.

Ahhh do you know about the carnelian and touchenite found in warren.

Eric,

I lived in Warren, less than a mile from the carnelian site. It is behind what is now a restaurant, along the banks of a stream. Last I was there, there were pits all over the place and it looked line a war zone. I don't know if the site is still open.

its not i got busted by the cops there, they were madd nice to me and let me go. I proceeded to track it for more than 2 miles and found what my friends thinks is a major source almost all touchenite and some carnelian, I even found some orange chalcedony that had the gold chatoyancy. I now have close to 100 pounds of stuff from warren. Amazing things that would blow your mind. Sorry I haven't touched base hope all is well.

there is a rumor of a huge outcrop of touchenite on mount horeb road behind the mc mansions , but I have never seen it

Carnelian has been found in that stream valley from Hillcrest Rd in Warren, to Dockwatch Hollow, and into Bridgewater. The problem may be that the streams run through private lands and permission would be needed.
