Condolences to his friends, family and all our Russian colleagues. He will indeed be sadly missed by all involved in mineralogy, especially those concerned with alkaline igneous rocks.

The notice below is taken from the Russian Mineralogical Society website.

The RMS Presidium is sad to inform that the RMS Honorary Member Dr. Alexander Khomyakov passed away on Friday 12th October at the age of 79 years. Dr. Alexander Khomyakov was known as one of the prominent mineralogists, investigators of alkali massifs. He has found more than 100 new mineral species. He will be sadly missed.

I am very sorry to hear that Alexander Khomyakov past away. I had the first correspondence with him already in 1975, and had the pleasure to trade with him for many years, while he start describing new species from the Kola Peninsula. We finally met when he was invited to Norway in May 1992, and we showed him the classic locations of syenite pegmatites in Langesundsfjord and on the mainland. He was an eminent mineralogist, and is one of the world leading of describing new species, probably next to Pete Dunn.

One of his latest descriptions was sveinbergeite, nemed after Svein Arne Berge in Sandefjord, who gave this mineral to Khomyakov during his time in Norway 1992.

My sincere condolences to his family and all his friends and colleagues in the mineralogical community.

I first heard of the sad news in Munich and Morocco and just now have a belated chance to respond to this great loss for mineralogy. I was privileged to meet Alexander Petrovich when he attended MM2 in Toronto. He stayed with us for a few days and we had many interesting conversations about various subjects, many hours looking at minerals under the microscope and spent a very much treasured collecting day at Mont Saint-Hilaire with him. He was an outstanding mineralogist, very much dedicated to science and to his very close family.

Our sincere condolences to his family and colleagues in the mineralogical community.
