GeneralFred Pough Letter

Hello All....I'd like to bring to the attention of ALL members of this fine group a contribution by Dana Morong in the June issue of Mineral News, Vol. 22, Num. 6, June, 2006. It consists of a short commentary by Mr. Morong and an extensive letter to Mr. Morong from Dr. Pough. Both should be required reading for ALL who are interested in the science of mineralogy as well as the hobby.

If some of you aren't aware, Mineral news is a monthly newsletter for mineral collectors originally published by Lanny Ream (first issue 22 years ago) and recently taken over by Excalibur Minerals (Tony Nikischer, Publisher) and continueing in the excellant tradition established by Lanny Ream. I don't know if there is an on-line edition...I've never 'Googled' Mineral News, but the publication's e-mail is info@excaliburmineral.com.

If you can find a copy, READ MR. MORONG'S EXCELLANT CONTRIBUTION!!!!!

For those of us that do not have access to the article can someone get permission to reproduce it on this site or send me a copy ? please !

I believe that access to the on-line version of the newsletter is/was by subscription. - I know the "was" part is correct, because back when Lanny still had it he was offering on-line subscriptions. I'm not sure, though, if Tony is still doing that - or only offering the paper version.

Either way, I sort of doubt if Tony will allow anyone to crib from an issue that is so fresh. Maybe some things from older back issues - but a current one? The rag would be dead within a year: Why subscribe if you can get it free on the intermess?

TANSTAAFL!

I emailed Tony just now and asked him to check this forum....does anyone have Dana Morong's email address...it's been too many computers ago for me to find. By the way, Dana's contribution was in the form of a 'readers response' to the FINE article authored by Tony concerning the sad state of geologic education in the USA today. This was the May issue, p8, "American Education System Flunks Geology Usefulness Exam". Pough's letter to Dana just 'hit the nail on the head' SO succinctly!!

Don S.,

Contact me by email and I will send you Dana's email address. I am reluctant to post it on the net without his permission.

I think that one might have to get reprint permission form Tony N. at Mineral News (unless of course he wishes to post it). I haven't (as yet) heard from him about it but would welcome contact from him.
