GeneralMy MinDat Hangs

14th Sep 2017 18:48 UTCRonnie Van Dommelen 🌟 Manager

Recently (last week or two) I'll be using MinDat only a short while (5-10 minutes), when, after clicking on a link, MinDat hangs and the page never loads. I often work with several tabs open at once, which might be the problem but I have not had it before. I can close my browser and reopen but get the same problem. I can even switch from Firefox to Chrome and get the same problem, almost as if my IP is being flagged. A couple hours later I can use it again. This has happened to me both at homee and at work. Is this a problem on my end or MinDat?

Thanks,

Ronnie

Ronnie,

This is from David on another thread concerning this issue:

Hope this answers your question....

Ronnie,

Mine does the same thing especially when navigating localities. I have given up doing anything on Mindat after about 16:00 PDT. I am sure it has to do with over-load, because early in the morning and mid-day it seems to work fine. Today I've had no problems.

Thanks for the info. Sorry, I missed that thread.

Too much traffic is a good thing, I suppose, but I hope things can be improved. I need my MinDat fix!

I just tried to log in from a locality in order to add a photo and was unable - then I went to the home page and tried again....no luck. Checking upload statistics for today I notice only seven pages - far fewer than many days in the past and the message board, although not a desert, is not as populated as it has been in the past.....overload? by what or whom?

I think it may be some queries that need to be optimized. Both Jolyon and I are at Denver and really can not work on getting this resolved until after the show (although it does give us the importunity to work on some planning issues for the future).

David,

I like your use of the word 'importunity'. A new one on me, but quite revealing in your usage.

Cheers,

Keith

Maybe some kind and generous Mindat sponsor could donate the money for some new server equipment? Would myself if could, so to speak.

Or is the hardware setup / clustering already sufficient for handling such a large amount of database data and querying? After all, the site is very popular...

Cheers,

Joel

We are in the process of going to a new server and it actually is cheaper and a bit more powerful than the current one (But we would be more than happy to accept donations for improvements). Probably more of a software than hardware problem (I usually advocate throwing more computer power at a performance problem, but here we need to do some more work on the software).
