GeneralMinfind assigning minIDs

31st Jan 2018 17:47 UTCEdward Bayley

I recently purchased a specimen that had been listed on Minfind. I noticed that on minfind, it had been assigned a minID and was listed without a photo on mindat, but included some of the information. Rather than create a new minID for the same specimen, I figured I use the one already registered, but I think this has created some confusion in approving the image. The minID for the specimen in question is 72H-WO3. I just wanted to bring this up because I can see minIDs from Minfind creating a lot of redundancy if people upload the same specimen with a new ID.

Edward if that is a calcite - the specimen photos are there

Your MinID number is incorrect - the O you used should be a zero 0 There are no Os in minID.

But yes not all minIDs uploaded through minFind appear to have photos - guess that depends on the dealer. I also know of at least two mineral dealers on mindat that did not realise that their photos on minFind had minIDs.

If a specimen has multiple minIDs and we are made aware of it we can merge them

I have more than one specimen for which a dealer had previously uploaded an image. I always use the same minID when I upload my own pictures.

Let's hope those Minfind dealers remember to write the minId on their labels.

Yes, it is 72H-W03. Zero, not "O". It looks like my photo and info has merged with what was previously there from Minfind. I wish I could edit the minID page now that the specimen is mine since the locality description, though accurate, does not match the the mindat registered locality "Fletcher Mine, West Fork, Viburnum Trend District, Reynolds Co., Missouri, USA", and it makes it look like chalcopyrite is the primary mineral and omits dolomite.
