GeneralVanadinite from Poland

17th Mar 2018 19:16 UTCChris DeGrave Expert

Back in 2003 I bought some micro's from a European dealer. I am skeptical about the locality data provided for them. One of the specimens of highest doubt for me is a couple of vanadinite's supposed to be from Poland. When I asked for clarification of the location I got this in response - "Huta (mine)"Olawa" is the leading producer of zinc, lead and other metal oxides in Poland. The company runs a mine and its products include raw materials for various chemical industries: paint producers, pharmaceutical, ceramics, rubber, electronics etc. Huta "Olawa" has a long history of metal oxides production going back as far as 1845" - Does anyone have any ability to confirm or not this statement?

Thank you,

Do you sure, that this is exactly vanadinite and not synthetic zincite from Poland? ;-)

It was labeled as Vanadinite and it definitely is - but it's too nice. If material was being produced like that from Poland, I doubt that no one would be aware of it. But, I don't know everything, so maybe...?

So what is the question ? Do you want to know if Olawa is producting labolatory (etcetera) grown crystals similar to natural Vanadinite or if there is any natural occurence in Poland? First answer - I have no Idea, second - never heard about it..

The second - is there an Olawa Mine in Poland that may have produced Vanadinite? Doesn't sound like it from the responses so far.

Hi Chris!

I found mention of vanadinite in THIS ARTICLE.

It references the same publication as the only locality for vanadinite in Poland posted on Mindat: https://www.mindat.org/locentries.php?p=14247&m=4139

Are you able to post a photo of your specimen? I'm curious to see what it looks like.

What questions such and responses. :-) Where is photo or at least description (size, colour, shape of crystals, presence/absence of a matrix, association) of your sample? For the moment your question is similar to one from a Jewish anecdote.

So zincite from Oława can be very deep red as vanadinite, but for sure is not vanadinite. Vanadinite known from Poland is micro and very ugly, usually orangish crusts from Stanisław quarry: https://www.mindat.org/loc-132727.html

I know they aren't very clear pictures, but these are two of the "Vanadinites" from Olawa, Poland.

Hold your camera/phone further back from the specimen.

No, that's not from Poland. it's from Morocco.
