GeneralNew Mindat Page - Ten Things you didn't know!

18th Apr 2018 00:07 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

There are a lot of changes that aren't immediately obvious. So here is a quick guide to ten things you may not have noticed about the new design.

1) You can click on the Photo of the Day (behind the search bar on the home page) to zoom it to full screen. Click on it again, or just start scrolling to return to normal.

2) If you want to see the whole image instead of just the part that fits your screen, press the '1' key. Press the '2' key to return. This works best when zoomed.

3) You can click on the title bar underneath this to open the full normal photo view as before.

4) Depending on how wide your screen is you will have between one and five columns of boxes. On smaller screens some boxes are hidden behind others, you can click the < and > arrows to navigate between boxes.

5) In the More/Device Settings menu you have a new option for Light or Dark template for the normal pages.

6) On locality pages the map has moved to the top. Note that this won't appear this way on all pages just yet, older pages have to be cleared out of the cache first, so as they get edited or as new pages are added you'll see the difference. - an example: https://www.mindat.org/loc-2428.html

7) On these new pages the map at the top shows nearby localities in grey giving you a way to instantly see what else is near. Click on one and you can see the name and then click again to view that page.

8) Meteorite falls are shown with different icons to normal localities. Check out https://www.mindat.org/loc-21894.html for a good example of this.

9) Because you may want to see the map related to the list of localities (at the bottom of the page) you can click the 'Lock Map' button and the map stays stuck to the top of the page as you scroll.

10) We have a new default font on these pages. One of the main criteria in choosing one, other than general legibility, was to have a clear distinction between the uppercase I and the lowercase L. Previously, Ianthinite and lanthanite looked very, very similar!

Jollyon,

That green color used for banners and mineral list text is not dark enough. Some people like me have degenerating eye sight and need all the contrast we can get to enable easier reading. I find it very difficult to read the mineral lists with that color. Using a dark green or going back to black would certainly help in this situation.

Thanks for the positive changes! They look much better.

We have several options either we can simply change the colours or we can add an Option on the templates for higher Visibility

I would also prefer darker text. If there is an option for higher visibility would that apply to all subsequent pages you open?

The update looks great Jolyon!

Just a few comments regarding the < > arrows on the boxes to cycle through the different page links...

They can be a bit hard to notice at first, if you aren't looking for them. Perhaps an automatic cycling through would highlight which boxes are 'changeable' rather than static, and would invite further exploration by new users of the site...

I also noticed when moving to smaller screen sizes (3 columns or less), some boxes disappear altogether and are no longer accessible through the < > arrows ... this includes the 'popular minerals' page. Is this intentional?

And possibly a minor bug, but when in one column mode, if I click on the < > arrows on "community discussion" to see the "live reports", I get stuck in a cycle through the reports and cannot navigate back to the discussion box with the < > arrows.

I am using the latest version of Chrome on Windows 10.

This is the exact issues I mentioned previously. Now that I am back at work and on a PC, I see that there are many more info boxes visible. On my Android phone, I cannot see "Mineral Dealers," "Recent locality updates," nor "New Minerals"

I am also curious why the new emphasis on 'Mines and Mining', other than the obvious that mines could be a source of minerals - although many are not.
