GeneralReset of password

18th Oct 2018 03:22 UTCMartin Rich Expert

I tried to log in here on mindat, but got follow note:

"Your password has not been changed in a long time and may be insecure. For security reasons it MUST be reset now.

Use this form to reset your password. An email will be sent and you must click on the link inside the email within 15 minutes to reset your password."

Unfortunately I got no email. Any thougths?

I also got this message. Jolyon suggested to "check your spam folder, or the 'All messages' folder in gmail." Unfortunately nothing was in my spam folder, but I'll check in tomorrow to see if there's anything.

Mine came through almost immediately.

Check your spam box or the "junk email" box in Outlook.

Martin, must be a long way to Austria.

Same happened here, so I`m offline from now on.

If anyone is having a problem can you try the following:

First, try again today to request a password reset email.

If that doesn't come through within 5 minutes then email me (jolyon@mindat.org) and I will reply with the link you need to reset your password.

Thanks,

Jolyon

Tried today two times within 30 mins, checked also spam folder, nothing here ...

P.S.: Sorry was too busy and didn`t read the PM thing

Worked okay for me here.

It *was* a bit of a surprise, though - especially as I changed my password recently.

18th Oct 2018 14:12 UTCWayne Corwin

Mine came through almost immediately too.

I disliked the way it rejected my try's at "New Password" 4 times.

Jolyon,,, it would be nice if you posted 'what is expected for your password to be accepted'.

Mine came through almost immediately. The new password did not work the first time to get onto the site and I had to enter it from scratch but it seems to be working now.

18th Oct 2018 15:35 UTCPaul Brandes 🌟 Manager

I believe it does ask you for a password of at least nine characters to be accepted when you reset it.

The required minimum number of letters was indicated.

> Jolyon,,, it would be nice if you posted 'what is expected for your password to be accepted'.

The system is a little more intelligent now than it used to be. It rejects passwords that have been used before, and passwords that are not secure enough.

Something like

Cornwall1234

would be rejected even though it's 11 characters.

The system checks against a database of known password hashes well-known by hackers. If your password fails it may be on their list, and mindat tells you the password isn't strong enough I would STRONGLY advise you to change that password on any other site you may be using it on!

> It *was* a bit of a surprise, though - especially as I changed my password recently.

Unfortunately I didn't have a way of telling if you have changed your password via the edit your personal details page, so I have to assume passwords are old. When you forget a password and request a reminder I *do* know the date at which this was done, so I can avoid resetting the passwords for people who've done that recently.

If you changed your password recently (since 2014) and the password was reasonably secure the system should allow you to change the password back to what you had before. It's only passwords that were previously stored in a less-secure way (prior to 2013) that we can even check.

18th Oct 2018 16:39 UTCDonald B Peck Expert

My password is old and, I think, not very secure, but I did not receive the email. My account has a recent new name (same old password). My problem is that in the past, for some reason, my attempts to login were rejected and the only way I could do so was to create a new identity/password. I have about four of them, but only one works.

18th Oct 2018 17:28 UTCScott Rider

I thought getting that message was weird, for me. I had someone attempt to access a bunch of my accounts last week, so I changed my password for everything, including this website. Then this week, I get that message, you haven't changed your password in a long time... Well, I changed it last week LOL!!!

Joylon, is that something you pushed through to all accounts? I just thought it was weird to get that message when I did change my password really recently... Like last week!! But I had no issues receiving the reset email.

> Joylon, is that something you pushed through to all accounts? I just thought it was weird to get that message when I did change my password really recently... Like last week!!

Not exactly all accounts - but there are two ways to change the password. One is to enter a new password when you're already logged in, and the other is to request a password reset. Unfortuantely it is only the latter that is logged properly, so I couldn't tell if you have reset your password or not.

On the positive side, although it's probably too late for that now, it means your password was already probably secure and as long as it follows our new rules you could still use it.

18th Oct 2018 17:38 UTCScott Rider

I see! After last week, I have become paranoid, made my password really long, with special characters and numbers as well as letters. I'm not too worried about this site's password being hacked, as I have no financial info nor any real personal info other than mineral related stuff!! But its good to know you are on top of security!

18th Oct 2018 19:46 UTCJerry Cone 🌟 Expert

I was happy to get the password reset request when it showed up after two days of not being able to open Mindat, much less sign on. My computer seemed to be hung up on the last statement about the website being shut down for a few hours. The password change occurred immediately.

Possibly an unrelated problem is that many of the photos I uploaded just before the maintenance shut-down haven't been accepted although one after the shut-down has.

18th Oct 2018 22:00 UTCFrank K. Mazdab 🌟 Manager

I'm having a different issue logging in than others seem to have here.

I got the message that I need to change my password, and typed in my email address.

The reset email arrived promptly, I changed my password, but when I went to log in I got an error that the code had expired and I would need to change it again (this all happened within about 3 minutes).

I tried again and got the same error again, so I seem to be stuck in a loop.

EDIT: third time as well, so I'll sit tight until I get further recommendations.

I've never gotten a request to change my password, and I know it's likely not that secure. Maybe I shouldn't say anything....

"Possibly an unrelated problem is that many of the photos I uploaded just before the maintenance shut-down haven't been accepted although one after the shut-down has." It is unrelated. The person who works that area has not had a chance to review them yet.

After troubles with the artificial intelligence (tried more than 10 times to reset the password), I wrote a mail to Jolyon directly and he helped me with the link for the reset function.

Thanks Jolyon!

BTW, after my first contribution on this topic without log in, I was able to see my name and my avatar and I had access to my PMs. So I was "semi logged in", maybe this depends to my IP.

Martin, the messageboard keeps you logged in longer than the rest of the site does.

I've got the problem that my Mindat registration (12 years ago) used a now-defunct email address. Until now, I'd never bothered to even try to update it, as Mindat never emails me - until now!

So, I can't log into my account anymore as the old password isn't accepted, and I will not receive any reset email that the system sends me.

So is there any way, please, that I can update my email address and password at the same time?

Many thanks,

mal

Hmmmm....more issues. I was able to reset the password a couple of months ago. Now, however, when I try to log in it gives me an error message, but I am still able to post messages. Am I logged in or not? I don't have the option to log out, so I am assuming that I am not logged in. But how am I able to post messages here?

25th Jan 2019 20:59 UTCKeith Compton 🌟 Manager

If there is no log out box - top right of screen - then you are not logged in.

25th Jan 2019 23:09 UTCDon Windeler

Per Alfredo's earlier comment (Oct. 20) your log-in persists longer for the messageboard than for other functions (presumably editing photos, localities, or your home page.) It does make me wonder how you can tell the site, "log me out completely" in case you were on a shared computer and didn't want someone else to be able to post in your name. (My guess would be to wipe out browsing history and cookies, but I'm not sure how far you'd have to go back.)

Cheers,

D.

26th Jan 2019 00:01 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

Actually, all you have to do is select log out option. If you just let the logged in state expire, you still are logged in to the messageboard, but not the rest of the site. Logging out, logs you out of the messageboard and the rest of the site.

26th Jan 2019 05:49 UTCDon Windeler

Good to know -- thanks! My log-ins usually just lapse due to time rather than a conscious log-out, so that makes sense. If I ever end up signing in on a shared machine I'll remember that.

Cheers,

D.
