Hello friends:

I am trying to contact web companies/dealers in USA who sells micromounting acrilic boxes, clay and so on.

I have been told about Shannon's & sons, but I have tried with their email account, which seems to be dismissed.

Any of you who has dealed with Shannon, any uptodate email?

Anyone who can also suggest me more options? I would like to buy and receive the merchandise here in Chile.

thanks for your help

Have you tried Sauktownsales.com?

14th Jul 2009 12:56 UTCVandall Thomas King Manager

Fred Stohl in Toms River, New Jersey is a primary source for micromount boxes. I got my most recent order in November. He should be listed in the phone book. The last email I had was flstohl@yahoo.com

Jim @ Sauktownsales.com has always been a great person to do business with.

I highly recommend his site.

I have been looking for micro boxes and came across your name on Mindat. You mention Mikon i Germany. Do you have a website for this company?

Thanks

It looks like Mikon partners with Shannon. It would be cheaper to buy in the US than overseas if you are not in Europe. Mikon's site lists this contact info for Shannon:

Shannon & Son' s Minerals

Mike Shannon, 1013 N Palm., Gilbert, AZ, 85234, USA

michael@shannonsminerals.com

www.shannonsminerals.com

However, I too am a loyal Sauktown customer. Jim Daly is great, responsive, honest and a micrmounter.

I get boxes from Sauktown but have found another product that works well in mounting some micros. It is called "Quake Wax" and comes from Conservation Materials Ltd in Sparks Nevada and they do have a web site. I like it better than clay since it does not dry out and get hard.

My best experience up to now was Fred Stohl in Toms River, New Jersey as a source for micromount boxes. flstohl@yahoo.com

Next is the Althor Products in New York http://www.althor.com/ my source for black paper lining.

And for the black corks I order from Doug Rambo17 N. Avon Drive Claymont, DE 19703 USA

drambo5@yahoo.com

This is good if you want to use the American style box and mounting. Some people prefer the European somewhat larger micro box and do not use the black lining and corks.

cheers to all.

The Netmine is the English version of Shannon and Sons, they teamed up with them, I think. Try them, just type Netmine into Google!

Hope that helps,

Regards,

Matt. =)

Colleen Shannon with David Shannon Minerals is getting low on many supplies, but I think that she still has a few thousand of the 2-piece acrylic boxes. They measure about 2.25 cm (29/32") sq. X 1.8 cm (23/32") tall. She has the 1/4" ht. black lid (or base if you prefer) and the colorless transparent bottom. Colleen takes orders by FAX (480-985-0557). She also has a large supply of the 2" miniature boxes (+/- styrofoam inserts). She is currently out of the TN boxes. She also peddles a variety of the paper fold-up boxes.

Any update on sources for the black 1" X 1" X 3/4" micromount boxs. Sources seem to be getting fewer.

I will put in a plug for both Fred Stohl, for boxes, and Doug Rambo, for corks, black paper liners, tools, and probably boxes also. Both are extrememly reliable and fast in their service.

Hello there,

Does anyone know what has happened to Stereo-Optik-Grosch in Dietzenbach, Germany. Have they gone out of business?, they seem to have disappeared.

I would greatly appreciate any information regarding their status

I get a specific micromount box from them and I am now running low, I have found another supplier but they are not very generous with discounts for large orders.

Thanks for your help

Hello All,

After many years of mounting specimens with mineral tack, I'm now remounting my specimens "properly". This task is almost done.

But, I'm nearly out of plastic friction lid boxes to mount additional micro specimens, and thus, I'm looking for a source of boxes. Can anyone still recommend Jim at Saucktown.com? He appears to have reasonable prices on his boxes.

Some sources are asking nearly a $1 USA per box, which in my opinion seems expensive. But I haven't bought boxes for probably more than 10 years so maybe I'm way behind the times as prices go.

I'm looking for the "American style" of boxes, not the type of box that Europeans now normally use. I want to maintain as consistent of a box style as possible with my old mounts.

Thanks,

Will

Hello Will,

I get my micro boxes from Fred Stohl in NJ. His prices have been reasonable and he ships quickly. His email address is flstohl@yahoo.com

Oh, by the way, I don't think there is anything improper about mounting with tack. I don't do it for a couple or three reasons, but I really do dislike the stuff. It is almost impossible to get it all off a micro specimen and I have found that at least some of it dries out over time. Happy Mounting!

2nd Dec 2016 23:32 UTCWilliam Moats

Hi Mr. Peck,

I should probably say that I didn't mean to indicate that mounting with mineral tack is bad. After all, I did it for years because it was less time consuming, and yet, my specimens were trimmed, placed in a box using tack, and labeled. I grew up old school and so for me mounting the specimens on pedestals and using glue was what I really wanted to do with my collection. It's the way I started out, but jobs and kids and life just got in the way. So tack was it until I retired recently and decided that the mineral tack was going to be removed from my mounts. It taken me nearly a year to remount my specimens.

Of course there are flats of unprocessed specimens in the shed and garage. Thus, the need for more boxes. It will be like going on field trips all over again as I go through these flats.

Like you said, it almost impossible to get all the mineral tack off a specimen. In many cases, the mineral tack on my pieces had harden over the 20 years or so, and was a nightmare to deal with. Usually I could get away with hiding the residual depending on the way the mount went. In some cases, the residual tack shows and there was nothing I could really do about it except live with it. I fortunately did not damage but few pieces, and only totally lost only a couple of pieces trying to remove specimens from tack that had harden.

Does Fred Stohl sell the 1 x 1 x 0.75 or the 7/8 x 7/8 x 0.75 inch boxes in black color? I'm taking it that he doesn't have a web site.

And happy mounting yourself!

3rd Dec 2016 14:13 UTCRobert Rothenberg

Hi Will,

Fred sells the 7/8 x 7/8 x 3/4 size in both all black and all clear.

Bob

3rd Dec 2016 17:20 UTCD. Peck

Last I knew, you could get black boxes with clear tops and vice-versa, also. Fred's email is flstohl@yahoo.com,

3rd Dec 2016 18:55 UTCBeth Heesacker

If you are not a purist then maybe these boxes will work. At $169 per 1000 boxes it looks neat and clean and works for me. Maybe the black liners would work in them. I do not know.

Hi all,

I jusr received 1000 micro boxes from Mikon:

https://www.mikon-online.com

These are the friction lid boxes.

Very nice quality and the price is waaay under what US manufacturers seem to offer.

Best,

Hello again,

I should add that shipping took about two weeks - goods arrived undamaged.

Nice thing about these boxes is that the clear parts are (almost) optical grade, meaning you can easily and clearly view the specimen under the 'scope without popping the cover - in case you're looking for that "particular" specimen.

Hans

Donald Peck,

I have recently been talking with Jim Daly of Sauktown Sales. Fred Stohl has been experiencing some health problems, and responsibility for the mold has been passed down to his brother Paul. Jim borrows access to the mold, and has an injection molding company use it to make boxes for him. Currently Jim has a large number of the black bases, and is waiting on the company to send him clear tops. When they do, you will be able to get your favorite boxes from him, at a reasonable price.

I have also called Althor Products. They have plenty of the P-1 clear boxes available, but none of the P-10 or P-13 boxes.

http://althor.com/smaller-square-and-rectangular-boxes-2

They are willing to do a special run for anyone, but require a minimum order of 1000 boxes. Hope this information is useful to everyone.

Hello Joe;

And Happy New Year. Thank you for the information. Do you have an email address for Paul Stohl? Do you know whether Fred still has access to his computer? I would like to send him my best wishes. Or if he does not,, do you have a mailing address?

Don

9th Jan 2018 22:34 UTCGary Weinstein

Don, et. al.,

Since I am the one who got Fred's collection and have the info you need, I am chiming in here. I will check with Fred's daughter to see if he has internet and is willing/able to communicate, and will let you know. I have been waiting for Paul to get in touch with the amount the family is looking for for the micro box business and a U collection of crystals from Germany. If anyone out there thinks they might like to purchase the business and keep it going for all collectors please keep in touch. So far the Leidy soc. and the Balt. soc. have discussed it but not taken the leap. Anyone needing some minerals is welcome to help me dig out from the enormous stacks of boxes!!! Help!

Gary,

Any update?

I was on the periphery of at least one conversation with the Baltimore MS concerning

Fred Stohl's box mold. Aside from the concerns that Fred isn't well, I don't know that anyone

really knew anything concrete to continue the conversation. I'll drop you an email to your

store address with slightly more background on conversations. Thanks.
