Are you coming to the Tucson show next year?

Posted by Ray Hill

Just wanted to start this one now, to see who of the mindat family is coming to Tucson.

The focus is on Arizona minerals...and I for one am excited to see what shows up in the this is one very interesting state , mineralogically speaking,
I mean, for instance, within the outer limits of the city of Tucson...there is a gulch where one can occasionally still find
gold nuggets after the monsoons have washed new materials down.
How many cities can boast of that in the U.S.?

Hi Ray, send me the airline ticket and I'll be there right on schedule! thanks Vic

like in the Bare Naked Ladies song...Vic, "If I had a million dollars....I would buy you an airline ticket." LOL

Kristin and I will be in Tucson for a couple days. Any chance of a party? I know it turned into way more work than you signed up for last year, but I heard several people say it was the best one in town!
Jolyon & Katya Ralph November 24, 2011 01:09PM
I'm not sure if Ray will be organizing a mindat party next year, but there will be a special mindat evening event on Tuesday 7th February at the Pueblo Gem and Mineral Show - more details soon!

But an actual party at Ray's place sounds like a great idea too! Ray hires the most ideal location for visiting Tucson if you don't already know - walking distance between Inn Suites and the Convention Centre. If you need somewhere to stay then contact him!
Alex Homenuke November 24, 2011 03:21PM
Yeah, great party at Ray's! Though for a while, I thought I had been teleported to OZ. We'll be there 8th to12th.

Hi Ray,

I plan on being there if my health holds out!

I would love to come to Tucson one of these years, but that is a bad time of the year for me to get away. :(
Tomasz Praszkier November 24, 2011 07:58PM
Probably I am coming too.

Great responses so far...thanks Jolyon for the comment! It is much appreciated, since you have been a denizen at the place for at least 2 of the years I have had it up and running, and definitely can speak from personal experience.
So if anyone wishes to inquire, I still have a space for either a couple or two separate people in one very large master bedroom.. and I can fill in any interested party on issues of location, rent and what comes with the package.

In response to the party question, John...the place we rent in central Tucson, is a modernized 120 year old private home , so if there is a party, it will be by invitation only, to respect the owners....and to protect the property.
Everett Harrington November 25, 2011 03:06AM
Hey Ray...I think I'll be coming too :)

Linda Smith November 25, 2011 03:12AM
Ray, you are the best host. Let me know in regards to helping if you will have the mindat private invite party.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend. However there is a possibility I might be able to attend the 2013 show.
Ray Hill November 25, 2011 08:08AM
Thanks for the kind offer, Linda. As Jolyon says, it won't be an official Mindat party, but it should be a party ...and I hope that you are mending well as you make this kind offer of assistance!
I am sad to hear that Jenna won't make 2012, and of course I already know that you will be coming Everett, as you are already a paid up member of the 2012 mineral maniacs at the mansion in Tucson.
Ray Hill December 02, 2011 05:48PM
I am a bit concerned, there do not seem to be a lot of people saying that they are coming, so far...come on everyone , let us know if you are going to join us at Tucson.. and if you are, contact me if you do not have a room yet, as I still have one available at the Mineral Maniacs Mansion...which is right within walking distance of everything.
Eric Fritzsch December 02, 2011 06:41PM
Ray- I'll be there for only a few days. Work/family won't permit me to be gone much longer. I've got my lodging taken care of.
Mike Royal December 03, 2011 01:06AM
ill be there 5th to the 13th
Robert Simonoff December 03, 2011 04:36AM
We will be there, but only for the days of the main event and the Wednesday afternoon/evening before.

Bryan Major December 07, 2011 04:26AM
I've never been out there, what would anyone recommend being the best time to go to catch part of the Quartzite show and part of the Tuscan show if thats possible? Also, is there any chance of getting a booth space anywhere in either locations on the spot or is everything basically pre-registered out there. Been wanting to go for years now and might just make the trip finally! :)
Bob Jackson December 09, 2011 02:59AM
Will be there, Ray, but we stay at a B&B in the hills. Will be running around peddling Spruce specimens as usual. Love the parking lot photo!

Steve Sorrell December 17, 2011 07:20AM
I'll be there, arriving on the 2nd Feb and leaving on the 11th. This year I'm booked into the Inn Suites.

Ralph Bottrill December 17, 2011 08:14AM
I hope it doesn't burn down this time Steve!

Steve Sorrell December 17, 2011 10:02AM
So do I!!! Mind you, that was the Executive...
Linda Smith December 17, 2011 10:03PM

I live there now :)-D

See ya'll.

I've never been, so I kind of want to experience it. 2/1 to 2/12 is the plan. I'm wondering if that's too long. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you folks. I'm in the Carlson Country Inn & Suites--hopefully it's a decent place.

Robert Meyer December 18, 2011 08:40AM
I booked flights and car today. Can't wait for this year's show: Minerals of Arizona!

I'm also in the Carlson Country Inn & Suites, from Feb 4 - 12. Look forward to meeting you!

Geoffrey Krasnov December 23, 2011 07:17PM
I am there every year, in conjunction with IC Minerals. I'll be coming in on Feb 4th through the main show. Hope to see many of you there!
Christopher Wentzell December 31, 2011 01:47AM
Hello everyone!! Looks like I will be in Tucson 2012 on Feb. 4-5 to see the Westward Look/Fine Mineral Show, and Ed Swoboda's talk, which I am really looking forward to, then out to the desert on the 6th and part of the 7th, and back in to Tucson the afternoon/evening of the 7th, and all day 8th, and the Main TGMS show the 9th and other shows the 10th, then back out to the desert to dig. Is that confusing or what??? Looking forward to meeting any fellow Mindat peeps who will be around then!!!

John McLaughlin January 02, 2012 01:20AM
Hi Bryan,
There is probably space at the Quartzsite Desert Gardens show - here's the link for enquiries
Desert Gardens is the only show devoted to minerals, lapidary rough and jewelry. The Tyson Wells show advertises a short show in January that is supposed to be gems and minerals, but the show promoters do nothing to assure that most vendors have related material. It's usually cheap Chinese tools, and a lot of other products, but very few rock and gem vendors.

Tucson shows are going to be MUCH more expensive. Then only show that I can think of that you might find an opening in at a reasonable price would be at the Tucson Electric Park (TPE). The best possiblity would be the fairly new show in the TEP's parking lot, which is a separate show than in the TEP. That fact is emphasized by the extraordinary long walk the two adjoining shows force patrons to make from one show to the other. The TEP show site is
The TEP parking lot show is not a readily found on the web. Try
According to the Arizona Daily Star (Tucson's daily) the site belongs to "Barbara Hinkley... the unofficial Mapquest of the Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase". She is also reported to be very fond of the TEP show.
The good news is that, except for the original show at the convention center, all other shows are free. Plus, there is usually some form of transportation between shows, though the promoters are getting less willing to pay for the inter show vans.

Here I am sipping a coffee realizing that this time next week I'll be on the road to Tucson.
This will be my first time at the Tucson show, and I will be there over a week.
The Denver shows are my usual stomping grounds, so I'm really looking forward to meeting some new Mindaters.
Maybe I'll see some great minerals too!:)-D
Christopher Wentzell February 07, 2012 12:41AM
Have been here in Tucson for a few days. Looks like I will be unable to attend the Mindat event on the 7th, which I was really looking forward to. :-( Unforseen circumstances always seem to come up. Maybe next year.....
