Mineral ShowsDenver Gem and Mineral Show

I have heard that many dealers will be present for the Denver show in private rooms they book to display and sell their material, similar to what happens in Tucson. Does anyone know where those people tend to operate, and the days that are prime for visiting them?

Thanks in advance, and see you in Denver!

Thanks, David. I haven't been to this show before.

It's a little smaller and a lot more user friendly than Tucson and about as much good material. The aspens should also be turning golden in the mountains.

The sunflowers should be out. It's the state flower.

Actually, you would need to head a bit east (sunflower is for Kansas - and they should be forming seeds right now). The blue columbine is Colorado state flower and it blooms earlier in the summer.

Thanks David. The first time I was at Denver I saw these blooming and someone told me it was the state flower.:-(

Also I was there for a weekend and on Saturday night everyone was wearing cowboy clothes. Since Colorado was south of Alberta and they have cowboys, I asked the shuttle driver to the airport next morning if people really did dress like that in Denver. He laughed and said it Costume Cowboy night at the holiday Inn the previous night!

For the first time in several years, I did not make it to this year's recently ended Denver show.

Anyone who was there care to post some pix and impressions of the crowds, exhibits, new finds, dealers and sales etc etc.

Gail Spann is currently posting her pix and impressions on Jordi Fabre's website; anything for Mindat?

Regarding new finds in quantity, Spirifer Minerals had a lot of sharp native copper crystals from Morocco. Steve Perry had several enormous Japan-law citrine quartzes from Africa. There were apparently much larger-than-before volborthites from Mexico, but I didn't see them myself. Most everything else I saw personally were either one-of-a-kind specimens or things I'd seen before, but I didn't get around much, so there must have been a lot of things I'd missed.

Several dealers from Europe had trouble from U.S. Customs or Border Security or whatever it is called these days. Apparently, with a B1 business visa one is only allowed to do "business", not "work". And selling rocks is interpreted as "working", not "doing business". Such rules have been on the books for decades already, but seldom enforced. If enforcement is going to become stricter, it will potentially hurt the international nature of the big shows like Denver and Tucson. I'd hate to see Tucson shrink down to a local domestic show. Oh well, it will be interesting to see what happens next Tucson; perhaps Denver this year was just a fluke.

As for "How were sales?", over the years I've discovered that that is an utterly useless question to ask. At any show there will be dealers who are grumbling about poor attendance (even when the parking lots are full to overflowing); many will say sales are down from last year. Others will be ecstatic and tell you they had their best year ever. Asking a dealer how sales were tells you much more about the personality of the dealer than it does about any actual economic numbers.
