Improving Mindat.orgAragonite pseudomorph ?

29th Jan 2017 01:52 UTCReiner Mielke Expert

https://www.mindat.org/photo-799442.html strange looking aragonite, sure looks a lot like anhydrite. I assume you tested it with acid? Could it be a pseudomorph of anhydrite?

I have not tested it - it is entirely encrusted with qtz but I will investigate.

I agree with Reiner! Most likely it was anhydrite, not aragonite.

Or possibly baryte?

Or possibly diopside? Similar habit (for what can be seen through the quartz encrustation) to a specimen I have from Thetford mine Quebec.

I also note the title says "axinite group". I assume that is the associated mineral on the specimen matrix because I don't believe anhydrite is part of the axinite mineralogical grouping. Please correct me if I am wrong.
