Hi list!!!

My name is Derik Bowers,,i have a large collection of Trinitite. Trinitite is radioactive fusion crust/glass from the first atomic bomb at the Trinity Site in NM. I am looking for North American minerals in trade,,I like east coast minerals,,Pennsylvania,,NJ.,,CT,,,Maine,,,,and i would trade by the lb of Trinitite,,Thanks!

Hi Derik-

I run the museum out here at White Sands Missile Range where the trinitite comes from, and hear all the time about folks who have "a few" pieces, but your post sparked my curiousity - how in the world did you end up with pounds of the stuff?

I second your curiosity, Darren. I worked for the New Mexico Bureau of Geology Mineral Museum for almost 5 years and we would get a piece or small flat of the material in every once in a while, but I've never heard of "pounds" concentrated in one place.

Along the same lines, I was once given a melted piece of the metal tower that was used to support the atomic bomb but it got lost in moving to a new house. :-( Hopefully I just misplaced it somewhere and can find the pieces again down the road.

Wow, I didn't catch date either.

When I was much younger (around 30 years ago) Dr. David Lewis had several 5 gallon buckets of trinitite. He was selling them for $0.50 to $1 each.

I got a large hand full from him and have given them away over the years to where I only have a few left.

Derik is a good friend of mine, you can contact him still, jackstraw922@yahoo.com

His material, and he has A LOT of it, came from a source that collected it well back before it was prohibited to do so. A guy collected it, he died, the wife went to sell it off on eBay back in the late 90's, Derik worked out a deal to take it all, now I think he has the largest amount of it anywhere. Darren, you can find an ad I ran for derik in the Fakes and Forgeries issue of The-Vug.com Quarterly.

You should totally take him up on his trades, he has fantastic deals last I knew. The problem is that you can not sell that stuff on eBay, they take it down in a heartbeat. As Derik is an eBay seller, this has been a major thorn in his side. If it wasn't for that holding him back, he would be out of material by now.

100% real and my tip to you is, give it a quick soak in muratic acid and the stuff becomes BEAUTIFUL.
