Mineral ExchangesFinnemanite Puttapa mine for study

14th Jul 2017 09:58 UTCNatale Perchiazzi

Dear All,

could somebody kindly provide me with a specimen of Finnemanite Puttapa mine, Australia? My aim is to perform single crystal structure studies to be compared with results got on finnemanite from type locality, Langban, Sweden.

Thank you for your attention!

Hi Natale,

The occurrence of finnemanite at Puttapa was reported by Grubb (1971) but I don't think anyone has seen any from the locality since. It is considered a doubtful ID from the locality, and was not confirmed in Peter Elliot's careful study in 1991.

Your considerations stimulate me even more to study the phase reported as "finnemanite" from Puttapa mine, thanks!

I have collected at Puttapa many times and have examined many hundreds of specimens. I have yet to see any finnemanite. I would be very surprised if there are any specimens of the "phase reported as finnemanite".

It was reported as small greenish crystals. I have not seen any data to support the identification. Along with many other minerals reported from the deposit, it must be considered to be unconfirmed.

I think Peter and Ben are being generous to Grubb and his 1977 paper. His ID's were based solely on electron microprobe analyses and his identification of finnemanite extremely doubtful (to say the least) - I think he was analysing mimetite (which is fairly common at Puttapa) and choice of standards was not appropriate, giving a high Pb value. Puttapa is a pretty oxidizing environment and it is unlikely you would get a reduced oxysalt like finnemanite there. Also Peter and I made a pretty exhaustive search for the mineral and we contacted Grubb directly and was unable to provide any material.

I am sorry but you wont find a Puttapa finnemanite.

For that study, a specimen labelled finnemanite was obtained from a dealer and a Raman spectrum obtained. Is there anything in the paper eg. chemical analysis or XRD, that confirms that the material used was actually finnemanite?

Peter,

Actually nothing supports the identity of the studied phase with finnemanite. Moreover, comparing the reported Raman data with those of RRUFF database (finnemanite from Langban), they are quite different... But, as a matter of fact a mineral from Puttapa was studied, so, maybe we have an unidentified possibly interesting Pb-Cl (arsenate?) at Puttapa? ;)
