Gonçalo Barriga worked at the Neves-Corvo Mine as a Mine Geologist between 1996 and 2010, before embarking in a photographic career.

These photos were taken over a period of 9 months, in 2009, and constitute an insider's vision of a world known first hand only to a very small few, for whom the mine is almost a second home.

Contrast is everywhere. Light and darkness, the smallness of men against the huge machines or their jovial spirit against the hostile environment.
