Northern Arch viewed from North side

Strangles Beach, Crackington Haven, St Gennys, Cornwall, England, UK

A view of the arch from the North side, clearly showing the folded layers of rock.

View along beach from point of access.

Strangles Beach, Crackington Haven, St Gennys, Cornwall, England, UK

View looking towards the arch at the North End of the beach. The cliffs here, the highest in Cornwall, are heavily folded and contain numerous veins of white quartz. The arch in the distance, known as Northern Door, is formed from the edge of one such fold.

KL1-PX8Baryte, Calcite

Charmouth Beach, Charmouth, West Dorset, Dorset, England, UK

Nice, lustrous baryte crystal from a water filled septarian nodule of Jurassic origin. Surface is covered with pyrite/marcasite spots.

Maximum dimension of crystal is 31mm.

FY2-LFKCalcite

Eype Beach, Eype, Symondsbury, West Dorset, Dorset, England, UK

Calcite group starting to exhibit 'poker chip' style crystal stacking, on calcite lining a fossilised brachiopod.

F.O.V. 8mm

Photo stacked from 36 shots with Canon EOS 60D using Helicon Focus.

Sprays of golden acicular goethite crystals on calcite lining a hollow fossilised brachiopod.

F.O.V. = 14mm

Photo stacked from 41 shots with Canon EOS 60D using Helicon Focus.

Eype Beach, Eype, Symondsbury, West Dorset, Dorset, England, UK

Roughly spherical crystal on calcite lining a hollow fossilised brachiopod shell.

LVG-R91Baryte

Charmouth Beach, Charmouth, West Dorset, Dorset, England, UK

Single, matrix free baryte crystal from a septarian nodule of Jurassic origin. Surface etching and iron staining due to oxidation of pyrite inclusions. Note the self-repaired crack due to further expansion of the septarian nodule during the crystal formation; this is a fairly common feature in these crystals.

Maximum dimension of crystal is 43mm.

Photo stacked from 20 shots with Canon EOS 60D using Helicon Focus.
