View of the deposit

Saint-Lary, Ariège, Occitanie, France

In the 1980's, a forest track was opened for the exploitation of the Saint-Lary forest along the Northern flanks of the Calabasse massif, Pyrenees, Ariège department, France. Its course cut through a number of quartz veins which were soon found to contain geodes, because crystals appeared in the debris. The news quickly spread, and the locality was frequently visited by many local collectors, who attacked the veins with varying success. Cavities of different sizes were found containing clear or milky quartz prisms, often brilliant and sometimes accompanied by calcite or ankerite, not to mention the iron oxides which can impart a magical aspect to the specimens, especially when they have just emerged from their cavities still misted with water from their surroundings.
