View of the remains of the Moonlight mine

Moonlight Mine, Berringa, Golden Plains Shire, Victoria, Australia

The brick foundations that are all that is left of the mines infrastructure, the 400 foot deep, three compartment main shaft is at the right hand margin of the photo, it is capped but has subsided.
The reef the mine operated on surfaces behind the camera and dips steeply towards the mine, there was significant shallow workings along the reef but they have all been bulldozed in for farmland many years ago.

The reef runs directly under my west sheds!

Moonlight Mine, Berringa, Golden Plains Shire, Victoria, Australia

Light orange/brown blade like Dolomite crystal growth on clear colourless Quartz crystals in a cavity in a piece of reef quartz. Note the greenish coloured slate still attached.

Some of the Quartz crystals are almost completely covered in Dolomite clusters while others have just one or two crystals attached.

Collected May 2011. Specimen is 80mm across

0PF-KRNGold, Quartz

Moonlight Mine, Berringa, Golden Plains Shire, Victoria, Australia

Piece of reef quartz with a patch of gold as small lumps and tiny crystalline grains, the greenish material is slate (the so called 'gold slate' of the Victorian era miners). The specimen is actually two pieces that came out together but broke apart, I display them with the smaller sitting on top as photographed. Specimen is as found and only cleaned in water leaving traces of kaolin and slate.

FOV 65mm

Y70-G7TCorundum (Var: Star Corundum)

Although 95% of the sapphire from this location is blue there is the odd bronze coloured star sapphire found like this one. You can see the 'glow' under the surface of the stone, please excuse the mineral tack showing!
