Y5U-U1UArsenopyrite, Chalcopyrite, Sphalerite

Boliden, Skellefte mining district, Skellefteå, Västerbotten County, Sweden

Field of View: 0.4 mm

A polished section from the Geological Survey of Finland's collections, donated by Professor Uytenbogaart and Committee for the Summer School of Cambridge in 1963. GTK gratiously offered to borrow this set of 9 polished epoxy mounts. This sample is labeled "SS 17, Arsenopyrite-rich ore of Type B. Boliden, Sweden"
Off-white phase is variously oriented arsenopyrite, yellow phase is chalcopyrite, dark grey phase silicate, and light grey phase is sphalerite with classic "chalcopyrite disease". Plane-polarised reflected light.

YQP-PU7Windhoekite

Multiple photos available
Aris Quarries, Aris, Windhoek Rural, Khomas Region, Namibia

Field of View: 0.8 mm

A photomicrograph of windhoekite in reflected cross-polarised light. Glass slide preparate donated by the Mineralogical Laboratory of the Geological Survey of Finland.

V67-WLMSenarmontite, Stibnite

Viitaniemi pegmatite, Eräjärvi area, Orivesi, Pirkanmaa, Finland

Field of View: 1 mm

A sample found luckily in an archive box. The only Viitaniemi sample of mine with euhedral, grey octahedral senarmontite crystals, and acicular,grey-black crystals of stibnite. The red-brown mass may be kermesite, but this hasn't been analysed. Euhedral senarmontite is quite rare at Viitaniemi, usually it's massive, and sometimes associated with valentinite etc.

KNN-D4QFluorapatite, Heulandite subgroup

Multiple photos available
Borðoy Island, Faroe Islands, Denmark

Field of View: 33 mm

White spherule of fluorapatite (no evidence of OH) on top on heulandite crystals matrix. Both top surface and beneath it was analysed with Raman. Exchange sample from T.K.

9GY-VT8Andradite

Multiple photos available
Kohse mine, Tenkawa village, Yoshino district, Nara, Japan

Field of View: 1.5 cm

A gift from J.A., this iridescent ("Rainbow") garnet displays interesting patterns under a microscope. The FOV for the full-view picture of the garnet is 1,5cm.
The composition is mostly andradite, and the splendid colour display is due to microscopic lamellar structure, with different layers having slightly different composition and width. The beautiful patterns and colours change when rotating the sample under polarised light.

16E-HLDQuartz (Var: Chalcedony)

Multiple photos available
Mamuju area, Sulawesi Barat Province, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Field of View: 3 cm

A selection of Indonesian "grape agate", samples received as a gift from T.J. I selected a plain Quartz classification here, even though part of the material could very justifiably be called var. chalcedony [to which management changed the picture's classification.]
The samples display various crystal habit, and at least one of the sample contains in part a minority content of moganite. Composition and structure can even vary within a single spherule. See child pictures for more information.

45F-C3TStrunzite

Viitaniemi pegmatite, Eräjärvi area, Orivesi, Pirkanmaa, Finland

Field of View: 2 mm

A grouping of acicular strunzite from Viitaniemi. Good samples are not common today at the locality.

4MX-GF0Scorodite

Multiple photos available
Kaatiala pegmatite, Kuortane, South Ostrobothnia, Finland

Field of View: 1 mm

A gray-green crust of microcrystalline scorodite (raman-confirmed) on löllingite. Scorodite is fairly common on As-bearing mineral samples at Kaatiala.
