A seemingly uncommon magnetite crystal - these have an unusual luster which sets them apart from the pyroxene and titanite from this site. It is highly magnetic as well.

Current workings a few miles away

Hooper Mine, North River, Warren Co., New York, USA

There are current workings a few miles away on nearby Ruby mountain. My understanding is that it is similar garnet as to what was mined at Hooper and Barton garnet mines and is claimed to provide 95% of the worlds industrial garnet.

Amazing site view at the mine

Hooper Mine, North River, Warren Co., New York, USA

Who needs an excuse to collect at such a beautiful spot? Standing at the entrance to the mine where very large golf to tennis-ball sized garnets can be seen under-foot.
