Field of View: 10 cm

Test tubes of A. Pelloux (01.12.1868 - 02.23.1948) containing autunite, as raw material for production of radium, in two different stages of processing.
The smaller tube contains autunite crystals detached by scraping from the rock matrix.
The largest one contains finely ground autunite powder, which was then chemically treated to extract the element radium.

Lurisia Mine, Lurisia, Roccaforte di Mondovì, Cuneo Province, Piedmont, Italy

Dimensions: 5 cm x 2 cm x 2 cm

Autunite specimen from Lurisia personally collected by A. Pelloux (01.12.1868 - 23.02.1948) and preserved in his collection, along with other similar specimens from the same locality, with the accompanying words "material for study".

This "material for study", offered for sale by his heirs, was bought by Renato and Adriana Pagano in July 1970.
It was recently donated to the Civic Museum "F. Eusebio", Alba, where it enriches the collection of minerals of the province of Cuneo.

Lurisia - The main adit where radioactive water sources were discovered

Lurisia Mine, Lurisia, Roccaforte di Mondovì, Cuneo Province, Piedmont, Italy

The interior of the main Lurisia mine working, a 330-m-long adit that was driven southeastwards from the face of the former Nivolano stone quarry on the right bank of Lurisia stream, in a vintage postcard. As reported by Pelloux (1934), various autunite and torbernite mineralised areas and radioactive water sources were evidenced.

Lurisia - Health Resort - Radioactive Water Source

Lurisia Mine, Lurisia, Roccaforte di Mondovì, Cuneo Province, Piedmont, Italy

The mine tunnel, excavated during the 1920s in the face of the Nivolano stone quarry, was transformed into a health resort thanks to the sources of radioactive water. Postcard of 1936.

This image is the same picture shown as Fig. 451, page 277, in the book "I minerali delle Alpi Marittime e Cozie. Provincia di Cuneo".
