Molinetto gravel quarry, Cogoleto, Genoa, Liguria, Italy

Arrestra quarry can be easily reached by a walk along Arrestra stream approximately at the estuary. The quarry is abandoned and completely filled with scrap all around. In spite of this, very big rocks composed mainly of dark serpentine minerals can still be found. From these rocks, in which typical orange saponite, calcite/aragonite and dolomite veins occur, minerals can be collected using a light hammer. This is an example of carbonate mineral (possibly dolomite), that has been removed from one of these big rocks, with a small spot of saponite on one end.

Besides its beauty, the Bellecombe area within the municipal territory of Châtillon in Valle d'Aosta is very famous for the large number of rodingite mineral findings. Rodingite formations mantled by greenish chlorite schists typically include splendid crystallisations of calcium-bearing silicates, such as grossular, vesuvianite, diopside, epidote and titanite, as testified by the large number of pictures in this database. However, in a certain area of the mountain (north slope of Mont Barbeston) eclogite/chlorite schists outcrops are also present. In these rocks massive concentrations of almandine-rich garnet can be easily found, and mineral collecting does not require mining or excavations. Chlorite schists and eclogites can be easily found along the paths in the woods by walking around and looking at the ground. This is an example of an impactless pick up of a 3 x 3 x 1 cm rock including a dark red almandine-rich garnet, having the approximate size of 6 x 6 x 6 mm, found after a mountain walk.

A nice cube of pyrite found inside a calcite and glaucophane cavity along Rio Oremo, upstream of Chiavolino. This very nice piece has almost perfect faces. Red spots of rutile are clearly visible, together with green fuchsite and blue glaucophane all around. The mineral was found inside a rock clearly exhibiting a mixture of these minerals, all immersed in a calcite matrix.

A very nice sample of wulfenite found along the pathway to Sassaia at "Le Forche" locality. There, the rocks are quite fragile and it may easily happen that some big trees fall, hence, wrecking the surrounding ground, and consequently lifting up the buried rocks. Roots indeed can penetrate the rocks conglomerate and then as they fall they can drag and break the mountain, hence revealing crystals. Consequently these pieces can be found without excessive commitment. This is a nice piece for the locality because it includes bright yellow wulfenite crystals, up to 4 mm in size.

Nice piece of prehnite found in the excavated material at the Erzelli hill. The sample, typical for this locality, includes a clear vein of prehnite surrounded by albite. Overall, the sample is very heavy because these minerals grew on top of very hard dark red basalt. The crystal is clearly broken and partially damaged
due to massive material moving.

Along the pathways recently created in the Erzelli hill, minerals can be easily found. The excavated material has been indeed used as a standard construction stone and dumped to implement artificial embankments, but some small/medium size crystals are immersed in this basalt mixture. This is a very nice piece of albite with both cm- and mm-size crystalline structure. Crystal twinning is clearly visible by referring to each face of the biggest structures.

Close-up of a mineral found at "Le Forche". The rocks, there, are very fragile and landslides very commonly occur. In these occasions, from the top of the hill rocks can fall to the pathway-level; hence, very nice crystals can be easily found. This mineral specimen is a complex aggregate of various quartz crystals and contains black metallic molybdenite.

Photograph of a lattice quartz stone found at "Le Forche" after digging about 50 cm into the hill. The quartz specimen is aggregated in a micro and macro crystalline structure, and on some sides clear wulfenite crystals, resulting in an additive layer onto the existing quartz crystals, are visible.

A close-up of an epidote crystal found in the excavated material at Genova Erzelli. Epidote is clearly visible as it normally appears as a green incrustation, but its crystals are distinctly visible only through a microscope.

A specimen of garnet found along the Cervo stream, next to the gold alluvials location. The crystal, found inside a cavity of a glaucophane-bearing rock (very hard), is damaged after years of chemical reactions inside the rock.
