JHJ-47LBenstonite Ba6Ca6Mg(CO3)13 , Fluorite CaF2
Minerva No. 1 Mine, Ozark-Mahoning group, Cave-in-Rock, Hardin Co., Illinois, USADimensions: 2 cm x 2.5 cm x 4.5 cm
This is a miniature-sized specimen of Benstonite with blue Fluorite from the Minerva #1 Mine, Bethel Level, Cave-in-Rock District, Hardin County, Illinois. I acquired this specimen from Ross Lillie and it was formerly in the collection of Harold "Shorty" Millikan and Ron Roberts.
Benstonite is a complex and rare barium, calcium, magnesium carbonate, which has only been found at the Minerva #1 Mine and the Annabel Lee Mine (though the latter locality, according to Ross Lillie, was found in a single, small pocket). According to Gill Montgomery, benstonite and witherite (both late stage carbonates) occurred within five-hundred feet of the main shaft (Goldstein, 1997). Excellent specimens were recovered in the 1950s-1960s, while the mine was owned by the Minerva Oil Company.

3TE-TMQCalcite CaCO3 , Fluorite CaF2
West Green Mine, Ozark-Mahoning group, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-In-Rock Sub-District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USADimensions: 5 cm x 6 cm x 7 cm
This is a cabinet-sized specimen of Calcite on Fluorite from the West Green Mine, Rosiclare Level, Cave-in-Rock District, Hardin County, Illinois. I acquired this specimen from Ross Lillie and it was formerly in the collection of Louis Lafayette.
A fantastic combination of pale yellow calcite in sharp scalenohedrals on top of yellow fluorite with light blue-purple rims. The underlying fluorite is partially etched.
The Ozark-Mahoning Company opened the West Green Mine in 1942 and produced fluorspar ore up until the 1970s. Although the ore body was extremely rich, specimens that are accurately attributed to this locality are difficult to find.

W6J-2J3Agate (Dyed) with Quartz
Rio Grande do Sul, BrazilDimensions: 6.5 cm x 10.5 cm x 7 cm
This is a cabinet specimen of translucent agate with quartz from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Agates from this locality are very common and are typically cut and polished. Due to the sheer volume of these agates, many are made into decorative objects, including candle holders, bookends and even as a background for hand painted portraits.
Like many examples on the market some agates feature exotic colors like green, blue and pink, but these are not natural and are dyed. This example shows a blue-greenish center (proving that it is a dyed example) to a layer of quartz and finally back to a brown-green chalcedony edge. The specimen was a gift from my mother who found it a department store.
