Tallow Light

Elisabeth District, Deutschfeistritz, Peggau, Styria, Austria

Made an experimental mining historic study and tried to use an original lamp from around 1550 in a mine from that time.
How was the light working, how was it to work under such conditions?
You see a so called tallow light filled with beef tallow. The real authentic background of that lamp which is in my collection is from Schemnitz, Slovakia. Its original except the tweezers.
I found that spot within the Ottilien adit which was used to put such a lamp also anno 1550 (see the fine chisel work in the background!).
Would say thats me most possible authenticity you can get.
Made a series of pictures with that lamp inside the mine, this is one of it.

Galena Ore

Elisabeth District, Deutschfeistritz, Peggau, Styria, Austria

A rich, large and therefore heavy galena ore boulder in the Ottilien adit.
I am wondering why such rich ore was not used (the adit entrance is 1 min away). This mine was given up during the time of the so called Counterreformation (around 1550), so maybe there exists a connex with that.
