Comparison before and after pseudomorphosis. On the left, fresh and clear crystal of falottaite; on the right, the same crystal transformed, after 6 months, by pseudomorphosis, due to the loss of a water molecule, in lindbergite. The crystal retains its crystalline characteristics but loses its clarity transforming in a bright white color. Crystal subjected to SEM-EDS analysis. The article on the discovery has just been published in the issue 4-2023 of Micro, periodical of the AMI Italian Micromineralogical Association.

El Solitario Laccocaldera

04539700017126535113907.jpg
Solitario, Presidio County, Texas, USA

Around 35.4 Ma a large volume of magma was emplaced as a laccolith, which deformed the overlying rocks into a 10-mile-wide dome. Cretaceous-aged limestone flatirons mark the edge of this structure. Around 4 to 6 cubic miles of ash and pyroclastics erupted from the laccolith magma chamber to create a caldera 4 miles long and 1.2 miles wide, making El Solitario what is known as a laccocaldera.

A view from the paleontology room. In the center, one can observe a significant alignment of vertebrae of a Lourinhasaurus, an herbivorous sauropod dinosaur genus dating from Late Jurassic strata of the Estremadura region. Its name origin is due to the discovery of a partial skeleton, including a tooth and a hundred gastroliths, in coeval strata near the town of Lourinhã.
