The Shire of Dundas starts 700 kilometres east of Perth. It covers 93 179 square kilometres. By comparison it is about the same size as Maine, and slightly larger than Ireland. 1600 people live in the shire, mainly Norseman, its only town. The shire's boundaries are 45 kilometres north of Norseman, 50 kilometres south of Norseman, 165 kilometres west of Norseman, then extends east to the South Australian border, generally either side of the Eyre Highway.
The economy is based on gold mining, pastoral and tourism. The area around Norseman is part of the Western Woodlands, the largest semi arid woodland in the world, and biologically diverse. As you go east it enters mallee country before becoming increasing barren. The only sealed roads in the shire is the Eyre Highway and the roads leading from Norseman to Coolgardie, and Norseman to Esperance.
Norseman is a gold mining town. The Central Norseman Gold Ltd has operated mines around the town for many decades. Gold was discovered in 1894, when a horse called Norseman pawed the ground, bringing up a nugget. The town developed slowly hampered by isolation and a lack of water. Today it provides most of the basic facilities needed by travellers, although accommodation at times is in short supply. There are hundreds of old gold mines in the district, too many for Mindat to list.
There is a small geology museum in the town. Beyond this attractions are limited to visiting lookouts on hills, granite monoliths, wildflowers in spring etc. Across the Eyre Highway there is the Eyre Bird Observatory, however it is 4 wheel drive only and a fair distance off the highway. There are views across the escarpment at Madura and Eucla, and spectacular coastal cliffs around the Western and South Australian borders.
The shire area sits at the junction of several geological regions. The area immediately around Norseman and to its west is part of the Yilgarn Craton, with greenstone belts hosting gold, and outlying komatiite flows of the Kambalda and Widgiemooltha Domes, which host nickel are north of Norseman. The Fraser-Albany Orogeny borders the shire to the south-west. The eastern half of the shire is a huge slab of limestone.
There are two public fossicking sites near Norseman for common opal. See the tourist bureau. Some expensive gold specimens have been seen from the Bullen mine at Norseman, but generally most mines process the material, and those found on the surface with metal detector come with only vague location details.
Bland powdery and rare bat guano species are sold belonging to several caves on the Nullabor Plain. These are not accessible to the public because a) you need specialised caving equipment b) you need a permit c) you would disturb the bats d) you would find yourself knee-deep in smelly guano and rotting bat carcasses being devoured by carnivorous insects in 90% humidity and pitch darkness.
Meanwhile on the surface, large amounts of meteorites have been collected and are sold worldwide. Not that it appears to worry meteorite collectors, but the Nullabor Plain has recorded over 250 separate meteorite fall events, so identifying which event each comes from would be problematic.
The shire experiences high summer temperatures and a lack of water. Much of the shire is remote. The Eyre Highway contains half a dozen roadhouses and beyond this no towns, people, or water. Billygoat tracks across the Nullabor Plain are often covered with sharp limestone rocks ready to wreck vehicles. Help can be hundreds of kilometres away.

Bridge states that "Archerite occurs on only a few samples in the form of small tetragonal crystals up to 2 mm in length and crusts of a buff to clear colour. The specimens containing archerite are stalactites, with minor amounts occurring in the convoluted wall crusts, which are mainly aphthitalite".
There is no distinct cleavage and the mineral is relatively soft with a white streak and is water-soluble. |

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Neoarchean to Tonian : 2620 ± 36 Ma to 849 ± 9 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
