Pyroclastics (lahars), originated from phreatomagmatic eruptions, consisting of aggregates of carbonate fragments and lava xenoliths (containing pyroxenes, biotite, garnets, olivine and feldspars) in an ashy matrix cemented by calcite and zeolites (De Gennaro & Franco, 1971). Along the bottom of Fosso Pisciarello, the lahars have been highly weathered to form an unlithified reddish unit with a halloysite-10 Å matrix. Most of the minerals from the lahars have been only slightly altered, the exception being biotite, which often shows a partial or complete transformation to vermiculite and, rarely, extreme alteration to smectite (De Gennaro & Franco, 1975; Pozzuoli et al., 1992).
