LaCrosse County is underlain by Cambrian and Ordovician sandstone and dolostone. Both are well exposed as bluffs and along deep drainages (or "coulees") of streams draining down to the Mississippi. The dolostone is often quarried, where there is the potential to find drusy quartz crystals, chert, calcite , dolomite and sulfides such as pyrite and marcasite. Although in the "Driftless Area" that escaped recent glacial cover, fluvial sediments found along the Mississippi corridor are derived from glacial drift upstream. Thus there is the potential to find interesting minerals such as drift gold, banded iron formation, jasper, copper nuggets and "Lake Superior" agates in this alluvium.
