A nepheline syenite deposit being mined (open pit mine) by the North Cap Minerals, owned by Unimin and Franzefoss Bruk (2001). Currently ownership (2018): Sibelco AS.
The mine is under the Mt. Nabbaren on the southern side of Stjernøy island in the northern Norway. It was discovered in 1958. The nepheline syenite forms a lensoid body about 1,7 km x 250 m in dimension.
A part of the Lillebukt Alkaline Complex is a 13 km2 area with carbonatites, nepheline syenites, metagabbro and hornblendite. Along the margin of the carbonatites, apatite-rich hornblende-clinopyroxenite dykes (50-100 cm wide) occur, whose cores include high contents of ilmenite and ilmenomagnetite (up to 20%). The dykes are surrounded by fenites and are believed to represent injections from an olivine melanephelinite magma undergoing fractional crystallisation.
