Mount Grace, 1,617 feet (493 m), is a prominent monadnock.

Emerson (1895) describes the locality: "High up on Mount Grace in hornblende schist the mineral [tourmaline] occurs abundantly in radiating groups about an inch across of shining black striated needles. It occurs also diverging in both directions from a plane which is only marked by a line of fine black grains and from which the needles go out at right angles. The tourmalines have often absorbed all the iron from the surrounding rock, and a fine granular quartzite slightly tinted by epidote remains.

Stratigraphic Name: Ammonoosuc Volcanics

Description: Amphibolite, felsic gneiss, garnet-amphibole quartzite, and marble too thin to show separately at map scale. Gedrite, anthophyllite, cummingtonite locally abundant in amphibolite layers.

Comments: Part of Bronson Hill Zone (Ordovician and Older Rocks). U-Pb zircon ages suggest that the Ammonoosuc Volcanics and tuffs of the Partridge Formation were erupted between 453 to 449 Ma, meaning they are of late Middle Ordovician and earliest Late Ordovician age. The stratigraphic relationships of these two units is very complex with current thought being that the Partridge lies between the lower and upper members of the Ammonoosuc Volcanics (Tucker and Robinson, 1990) per MA015.
