The Klondike area is well known for gold production from bench and creek placers that are fluvial in origin and range from Pliocene to Holocene in age. Placers are classified into three levels of gravel with four main units. These include the high-level White Channel Gravel (Pliocene), the glaciofluvial Klondike Gravel (Pliocene), the intermediate-level gravel (Pleistocene) and the low-level gravel (PleistoceneβHolocene). The goldfields originated from the weathering and erosion of early Cretaceous, discordant mesothermal quartz veins.
Gold ranges widely in size, appearance and purity. Size ranges from minute flakes to 3937.7 g. The Klondike is also known to produce sharp, well-formed crystals of gold. Fineness ranges from 600 to 900.
On Mindat, The Klondike Area hierarchy is organized according to drainage basin and the natural hierarchy of tributaries.
Bonanza Creek and Hunker Creek are the major tributaries of the Klondike River with flows into the Yukon River in Dawson City. The Indian River flows directly into the Yukon River and has Quartz, Sulphur and Dominion Creeks as major tributaries. The Yukon River also has a couple of smaller tributaries.
