The Ontonagon Silver Mining Company was organized in 1873 to work a vein of silver discovered along the Iron River. One shaft was sunk and ore from the mine assayed at 24 ounces of silver per ton of rock. The mine operated for three years until 1876 when the site was abandoned. It is said that evidence of the mine can be found today although most of the rock has been removed from the site.
