The Avery shaft was begun in 1858 near the original No. 1 shaft. This shaft was designed to handle larger skips that had been developed to mine deposits of amygdaloidal ore. The shaft extended to the 90 fathom level before the amygdaloidal ore was exhausted by 1860. The shaft was operated sporadically after this point until the mine closed in 1887.
