Locality: 16 km south east of Kooline.

The richest galena and cerussite is found in a narrow bed of sheared mudstone, and schist, about 12 metres long, dipping 60 degrees south. This is found between massive quartz sandstone above, and 0.6 metres of lithic sandstone below. The Hanging and Footwalls contain some disseminated cerussite.

The lessees of the South Kooline Mine were Francis Gray and Hap Herrick, who were also carting ore from the Big Chief Mine. The Big Chief Mine is about 12 kilometres south-east of the main Kooline field, south of the Ashburton River and near the Kooline Station boundary. It was an open cut only 7 metres long by 5 metres wide by 3 metres deep. Other people were mentioned associated with the mine (possibly employees) in 1952. These included Darkie Hill (described as a Kooline identity), Jean Campbell, Win Adams, 'Doc'James who would ride the rough tracks on his motorcycle getting medical supplies for the mines. Lessee Hap Herrick whose nickname 'The Kooline Flyer' may indicate a history in the air force or some involvement with planes, but we don't know.
