Formed in 1971 from the village Banská Hodruša [formed in 1952 from part of Banská Štiavnica which was called Hodritsch in German), Dolné Hámre (German: Unter-Hammer) and Kopanice (German: Gerod).

The main mining factories in Hodruša-Hámre are Dolnohodrušský banský závod (Mayer shaft, Johannes Baptista & low Schöpfer adit), Katarína-Tiergarten mining factory, Finsterort mining factory, Hornohodrušský banský závod (Lill shaft, Michal shaft, Všechsvätých adit), Moder mining factory in Kopanice and Rozália mine. From all this mines is actually under production only Rozália mine. Here is exploited gold.
