Ref.: NY State Museum Bull. Nos. 249-250, Magnetic Iron Deposits of SE NY, Clarke, John M. (Sep-Oct 1921): Index Map, 43 & 93-94. An iron mine in magnetite ore located East of Sterling Lake and WEst of Tuxedo Lake, South of Southfields. One of the Scott group of mines. Started 1761 in an ore body almost 1 mile (1.6 km) long, hence the name. Workings included an open cut 500 feet long & numerous smaller pits. Produced > 37,500 tons of ore (1761).
